Recognizing that low morale had contributed to lackluster financial results, Conant and the company adopted a new pledge to win in the marketplace by winning in the workplace, and developed new strategies to improve its performance in both. Since that time, employee engagement has become the company's key measure of workplace success. Total shareowner return became Campbell's key measure in the marketplace - against both measures, the company has made significant progress.
