Letter to the Editor - Liquor is About Moorestown’s Economy Not Politics
10/20/07
As the members of the Local Government Efficiency Task Force we are proud that the liquor referendum is being posed to the residents of Moorestown. The Economic Development Advisory Committee pursued having this question on the ballot believing the economic benefits of a liquor license to our Town are well beyond a one time fee, and include the ability to increase our commercial districts productivity, which is supported by retail industry data. The idea for a liquor referendum was not by some tangential group of individuals in town, as some would have you believe, but rather, the suggestion of offering liquor licenses is contained in our Town’s current master plan developed by our Planning Board and passed by prior Council and was again suggested, among many other recommendations, by the bi-partisan Local Government Efficiency Task Force.
Over the past several weeks front and center on the pages of our local papers have been articles regarding the upcoming liquor license referendum on November 6th. While the views of everyone in this Township are indispensable in order to fully understand the complexities of this important issue, one thing should remain on the sideline, PARTISAN POLITICS.
The decision to have liquor in Moorestown should not be a partisan political decision, but rather should be a personal decision about how each of us sees the economy of Moorestown. Moreover, your vote should be about how you view Moorestown, whether you believe Moorestown should remain the same, or whether you believe that change is needed, whether you believe that liquor licenses provide a benefit to our Town, or create an additional burden. Each of these decisions is personal and will have an impact on how Moorestown moves forward.
While we cannot speak for the entire Town and nor do we feel it is our place to do so, we stand together in the belief that this decision is important for all Moorestown residents, as it will have an impact on our future, pass or fail. As the members of the Local Government Efficiency Task Force we support the liquor referendum and are proud that all voters in Moorestown will have the opportunity to voice their opinion on November 6th.
